Hey Melver!

Hey Melver!
(In honor of John Andrew Melver’s retirement, 10 June 2013)

Some folks have a job, the blessed a vocation.
Those aware, know life brings gifts each can use.
John knew sports and games, not just for vacation.
Deeply in love with physical health almost to abuse;

Growing up, he did survive well, with an older brother,
‘Team Melver’ was a duo that no neighbor could daunt.
Soon outshining that sib John lettered without a bother,
Marching through high school, college, prowess never did flaunt.

Ellensburg called with its cowboy, cowgirl flair.
Central Washington State brought more than a degree.
A deeply loved partner, Julie Pomeroy, his soul-mate fair,
Amazing match this king and queen of PE for all to see;

Education professional from graduation day,
John was willing to provide a strong teacher at work.
An odyssey of schools, districts, collected on the way.
None ever thought their PE teacher, Melver, a jerk.

Soon the halls would ring with the shout, “Hey Melver!”
Colleagues, students one and all, found a resource of love.
Serious lessons with a strong dose of humor, always clever,
‘Team Melver’ always a strong contender, values from above.

Melver family life resplendent with strong waves of joy,
 Toby, Joshua, Megan, Kiki, Emily each a blessing true;
Today a pleasing sight, players all, skills and gifts employ.
Together they bring love, justice, learning to not a few.

Faith has ever been a hallmark of this man’s life.
Never timid or shy, he leads out his LDS banner high.
Whatever the day brings, soft breezes, shearing strife,
John, his crew will address the truth without fear or sigh.

So Melver, another large volume in life’s library draws to a close.
Your long-lasting genes will sustain another score of years.
Be assured we deeply love you, a present blessing as time flows.
Find the rhythm of life’s playground; you’ve made it safe, no fears.

The Rev. Ronald Allen Melver, M.Div.
