Ground of Being

Ground of Being
           Ps. 85.11-12

Elusive this ego-less enterprise of belief
                                                           Is-ness a totality embracing all
Triune God rejoices in creative tension not relief
Followers respond to this constant call.

Am I complete then, as I contemplate self?
Does wholeness derive from me or come as a gift?
Paradoxical always a better choice from thought’s shelf
Inclusiveness sets roots deep, safe from surface shift.

Our Ultimate God, the One from whom all comes,
Delights in abundance, in plethoric expressions of love.
All aspects of creation defy rational sums
The only bound, truth, monitored from above.

Spirit entices each living one to express life’s joy.
Life in this lovely garden, a wonder of grace.
Each plant part essential, none annoy.
Rhizome, stalk, leaf, blossom, seed pod: Creator’s face.

Word Incarnate walks quietly ‘mongst the plant life
Pauses to breathe in the most delicate of scents.
Reaches, touches, blesses, coaxes proximity from strife
Peaceful tensions taught, co-creation heals all rents.

Folk often gather ‘round beliefs that satisfy their eyes.
“Let us make a statement about faith not include the Maker.”
Religion as natural inclination too often truth defies.
Silly statements from the loaf, the bun, about the Baker.

Spirituality connects one to the Holy
Religion struggles to make that connection clear.
Together theology is born, a discipline of the wholly.
Life centers in love, grace, shalom not existential fear.

Grow my friends, the ground will feed your need!
Become who you are, reach to heaven in response.
Our Gardener the gardens’ base, worry not about the weed.
Bring the wonder of this day forth, with abandon, dance.

The Rev. Ronald Allen Melver, M.Div.
